Startup Guide: Memphis
Intro
The economic and cultural hub of the Mississippi Delta, Memphis, TN, has a storied history of innovation and entrepreneurship - it is the birthplace of trap music, rock & roll, next-day delivery, and free ice at hotels! This spirit of entrepreneurship continues today, with a burgeoning ecosystem of tech startups and innovative, sizable clusters of corporations and activity in the logistics (FedEx’s global headquarters, busiest cargo airport in the USA), medical device (#2 medical device producing city in the country), and healthcare provider (St. Jude, Methodist Le Bonheur) industries.
Memphis’ startup ecosystem is characterized by its close relationships with its local industry clusters, leading to opportunities for advice, partnerships, and pilots, as well as its close-knit network of support. This energy and community is bolstered by a recent influx of large projects, including Ford’s $5.6B Blue Oval City development just outside Memphis, and xAI’s Gigafactory of Compute and their recently announced 500+ acre expansion.
There’s never been a better time to move to Memphis, or to start a business there. This guide is designed to help startup founders and operators navigate the unique landscape of running a business in the “New York City of the Delta.”
