Startup Guide: Wilmington, NC

Diving deep on The Port City's startup scene and resources for entrepreneurs.

Wilmington, North Carolina is often best known for its beaches, historic port, and film-industry roots — but over the past decade, it has quietly become one of the Southeast’s most compelling emerging startup hubs. What was once perceived mainly as a coastal lifestyle city has evolved into a dynamic innovation community shaped by fintech wins, a strong university talent pipeline, coordinated ecosystem building, and a growing investor base – and the city was the fastest growing in the United States in 2024, according to moving data from United Van Lines.

Wilmington’s growth story begins with a series of structural shifts. The extension of I-40 into Wilmington in 1990 opened the door to stronger connectivity across the state. Life sciences firms like PPD and Trans 1 Pharma grew substantial local teams, while Screen Gems Studios produced multiple major films, bringing new creative and economic energy into the region. But a key underlying catalyst came from Live Oak Bank, whose technology-forward approach to small business lending helped create a cluster that still shapes Wilmington today. A back-office software tool built inside Live Oak eventually spun out to become nCino, one of the most successful fintech companies ever founded in the Southeast. nCino scaled rapidly, raised more than $200M, and ultimately went public in 2020 — placing Wilmington on the national fintech map and generating a strong pipeline of experienced operators, Salesforce talent, and future founders. Live Oak continued reinforcing this momentum by co-founding Apiture, launching one of the largest tech VC funds in the South in Canapi Ventures (now managing more than $750M), and building a culture of tech innovation that became central to Wilmington’s economic identity.

This momentum has helped contribute to the incredible surge Wilmington is experiencing. Live Oak Bank, nCino, and Apiture have collectively hired more than 1,000 UNC Wilmington graduates, establishing a reliable technical and operational talent base. Healthtech, biotech, and deeptech startups have also gained traction, supported by a collaborative set of ecosystem builders and a quality of life that attracts both young founders and experienced executives; OpiAID, Boreas Monitoring Solutions, NUREAM, Artemis Immersive, CareHome Health Solutions and Predicate AI are just a subset of the exciting names succeeding in Wilmington, and community software provider Vantaca just achieved unicorn status with a $1.25B valuation in October 2025.

UNCW has played a foundational role in this evolution. Under former chancellor Gary Miller, the university launched the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) — one of the region’s earliest dedicated entrepreneurship hubs, which helped lay the groundwork for the now-powerful entrepreneur ecosystem in Wilmington. CIE now serves as a connector between students, founders, mentors, and investors, helping build an ecosystem supported by more than a dozen organizations and partners in the Wilmington Small Business Coalition. Groups like Network for Entrepreneurs in Wilmington (NEW), Genesis Block, WALE Angel Network, VentureSouth and Wilmington Investor Network (WIN) provide resources, programming, and capital that many founders rely on at the earliest stages.

Wilmington’s greatest differentiator, however, remains its quality of place. Entrepreneurs cite the city’s coastal lifestyle, low congestion, and strong sense of community as reasons to build their companies here rather than in larger, more competitive metros. Wilmington also benefits from close proximity to Raleigh-Durham — enabling founders to “borrow” infrastructure, investors, and research support from the Triangle while offering statewide organizations an appealing beach-adjacent destination for programming and retreats.

Today, Wilmington’s economy blends fintech, life sciences, healthtech, and software in a way that is unusual for a metro of its size. Talent from Live Oak, nCino, and Apiture has seeded new ventures; biotech and pharma logistics firms are expanding; and UNCW continues growing its innovation footprint. Together, these forces position Wilmington as a rising coastal innovation hub in the Southeast.

Healthtech, deeptech, and biotech activities are picking up with additional SBIR and grant funding resources; the concept of water- and ocean-focused bluetech is expanding around UNCW’s research footprint with the annual Ocean Innovation Conference. Angel networks are becoming more active by syndicating deals with other regional funds as more executives and retirees relocate to the coast. And ties with Raleigh-Durham are strengthening, enabling the city to plug into a broader statewide innovation ecosystem without losing its coastal identity.

With strong support organizations, a proven talent engine, and one of the most distinctive qualities of place in the Southeast, Wilmington is well positioned to keep rising as a destination for founders who want to build ambitious companies in a collaborative, coastal environment.
